In 1991, with honest investors backing her this time, Jackson Indian Bingo opened its doors. Today, Jackson Rancheria Casino and Hotel employs more than 1400 people, and is the largest employer in Amador County.
The Rancheria has built 14 new homes for its residents. It also has a dental clinic, a recreation center, water and sewage treatment plants, and an auto mechanic shop.
Founder, Margaret L. (Hughes) Dalton, has been honored as "Woman of Distinction" by the Nationwide Register's Who's Who in Executives and Businesses and as "Business Person of the Year" (1998) by the Amador County Chamber of Commerce. She is Vice-Chairperson of the Tribal Alliance of Northern California; on the Board of Directors of Mariposa-Amador-Calaveras-Tuolumne Health Board; and on the Board of Directors of the Amador County Chamber of Commerce.
She is active in fund-raising activities for youth programs both locally and nationally. She met with President Clinton at a private luncheon to discuss Native American problems in California.

“Building a Sense of Community Through Sharing”
Me-Wuk territory spans much of the Central Sierra Nevada in California. The Northern Me-Wuk homelands surround much of the Central Sierra region, including present day Amador and Calaveras counties. The Sierra Nevada counties of southern Calaveras and Tuolumne comprise the Central Me-Wuk homeland, while the Southern Me-Wuk homeland is bordered by Mariposa county and Yosemite National Park. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, who own and operate Black Oak Casino, are direct descendants of all three regional tribes.
Gambling is not foreign to the Me-Wuk. They have played games of chance for most of their history. One of the more popular games is the “Hand Game”, played while singing gambling songs. Teams compete in guessing the “bones”. Games can last for minutes or for days. An annual Hand Games Tournament is held every September as part of the Tuolumne Rancheria “Acorn Festival”. |
